*Karen Owens, who manages the East Hall Community Center for Hall County Parks & Leisure Services, was installed last week as the District 7 Commissioner for the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association's District 7.  She was installed at the District 7 annual banquet, which was held at the North Hall Community Center. Gainesville Parks and Recreation was honored as Agency of the Year and Gainesville youth baseball coach Jacob Billingsley was named District Volunteer of the Year.

*Northeast Georgia author Kristy Hamby made a special visit to the Lower School at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School last week to share her second children’s book 'Chicken Lips: One Lucky Cow," a follow-up story to her first book "Chicken Lips."   Hamby lives on a farm near Cumming.

*USDA Rural Development Georgia will host a Community Prosperity Training Summit in Elberton Nov. 18.   There is no cost for the daylong meeting which is intended for community leaders, elected officials, city and county employees, businesses and chambers of commerce, faith-based organizations, community non-profits, veterans, and others.   For more information, click here.

*The Hall County Library System will host New York Times bestselling author Karen White on Wednesday, October 23 at 11:00 at the Spout Springs Library.  White will discuss her newest book, "The Christmas Spirits on Tradd Street." The program is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary. This event is sponsored by Friends of the Hall County Library. For more information, call 770-532-3311 ext.191.

*The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of people across the country to assist with the 2020 Census count.  Gwinnett County Government is hosting a Census Bureau hiring event Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville.  For more information about 2020 Census jobs, including job details, pay, locations and answers to frequently asked questions, visit 2020census.gov/jobs.

*Keep Forsyth County Beautiful, in partnership with the Forsyth County Recycling and Solid Waste Department and the City of Cumming, will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Recycling and Disposal event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Cumming Fairgrounds' parking lot 3 (235 Castleberry Rd.).

*Volunteers recently spent some time planting 24 Hemlock Trees on Yonah Preserve in White County.  This work is the third in a series of projects by Save Georgia Hemlock volunteers.  White County owns the 1,000-acre site.  Save Georgia’s Hemlocks is a 100% volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of concerned citizens dedicated to saving endangered hemlocks through education and charitable service.
