Expected impact of tropical storm on north Georgia

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

South Georgia is expected to bear the brunt of the wind and rain from Tropical Storm Nestor today with Gainesville and the rest of the state expecting some rain and gusty winds.

The storm is forecast to move quickly as it travels southwest to northeast across Georgia, with cloudy skies and mild temperatures expected to replace it by Sunday.

As for the amounts of rain and top wind gusts that north Georgians can expect today, the National Weather Service predicts rainfall will total one-half to one inch in places like Atlanta, Gainesville, Canton, and Blairsville.  Just to the south of those areas, Athens, Eatonton, Griffin, and surrounding areas are expected to receive one to one-and-a-half inches.  South of those places and along the coast, two inches or more are forecast.

Wind gusts will likely range from 25-30 miles an hour across most of north and central Georgia to 45-50 in south Georgia.

Nestor's center is expected to track from southwest Georgia, across the middle of the state, and into South Carolina via the Augusta area.  The full impact of the storm on north Georgia, including Athens, where the University of Georgia football game is scheduled to begin at 6:00, is likely to arrive around 7:00.
