Congressman Doug Collins of Gainesville may be home for the holidays, but much of his focus remains on Washington, D.C. and the impending impeachment trial for President Donald Trump before the U.S. Senate.
Collins was a guest on the Monday edition of WDUN's Morning Talk with Martha Zoller, and he said while most people might have been doing their last-minute Christmas shopping over the weekend, he was reading Lewis Deschler's impeachment documents as continued preparation for a possible Senate trial.
"My first and foremost job is representing the 9th District and Georgia and this nation and also contiuing to support this president against what is a sham impeachment by the Democrats, who are trying to influence next November's election," Collins said.
Collins made his comments after Zoller asked about a possible U.S. Senate run, a question prompted by a weekend article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
"I'm preparing to do my job as I've been elected to do," Collins said. "Those decisions will just have to wait. There's a higher calling that I have right now and we'll look forward to talking about that maybe in the future."
Collins had been considered a favorite to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated at the end of the year by the retirement of longtime Senator Johnny Isakson. Instead, Gov. Brian Kemp appointed political newcomer Kelly Loeffler to the post. During the process, Collins indicated he would consider a run for the U.S. Senate in 2020.
