North Georgia is drought free for the first time in months

By AccessWDUN Staff

Widespread, heavy rainfall across Georgia and other southeastern states in the last week put an end to most lingering drought conditions, according to information released Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Rainfall totaling anywhere from 2 to 6 inches fell across Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and the western Florida Panhandle.

"A 2-category improvement was justified for northern Georgia and the western Florida Panhandle where the heavy rainfall this past week eliminated 60-day precipitation deficits," read the weekly statement.

Stream flows have recovered for the most part, thanks to the rain. Additional rain is expected this weekend, according to forecasters

While drought conditions have been erased for most of Georgia - including the northern part of the state - abnormally dry conditions still covered a pocket of southwest Georgia, according to this week's map.
