Anna Ruby Falls closes after landslide Friday

Park officials had no choice but to close Anna Ruby Falls after the week-long rain caused a landslide, which left several trees, rocks and soil spread across the road.

"The whole area is unstable right now due to the heavy rains," Steven Bekkrus, the public affairs officer for the Chatahoochee Oconee National Forest, said.

The park has worked immediately to get the road clear, however, the weather has played a huge role in the cleanup of the debris. Bekkrus said that since the rain doesn't appear to be letting up any time soon, it could be as late as next week before the park can reopen.

"We're hoping to get some folks out there today (Friday) with some heavy equipment, and begin work on it today," Bekkrus said. "We know that this is a high priority site and people like to go visit Anna Ruby Falls, it's a spectacular location. So, we are going to do everything that we can to get it open as soon as we can," he said.

Bekkrus said the park has asked people to avoid the area all together, because the conditions of the ground pose major safety hazards. He said for any person who chooses not to oblige by the closed area could face serious charges.
