Woman arrested for fabricating story about carjacking

By B.J. Williams
Forsyth County authorities arrested a woman Monday after she apparently made up a story about being carjacked by two men at an intersection on the north end of the county last week.

Cpl. Doug Rainwater with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said Stacey Annette Garner, 44, of Cumming called 911 early in the morning on Tuesday, March 26 to report the incident.

He said deputies went to the scene of the alleged crime at Crystal Cove Trail and Knight Road, but they soon became suspicious of her story. According to the police report, Garner told deputies she came to a stop at the intersection and two white men forced her to get out of her vehicle by placing a rope around her neck, and then drove away in her SUV.

"As we started investigating, we found her Ford Explorer nearby crashed into a tree," Rainwater said.

Rainwater said even though deputies were wary of Garner's story, they issued a lookout for two male suspects and then turned the case over to investigators.

"Through the course of a few days, they did some interviews with her and some other people and at that point we determined that she was, in fact, lying to us," Rainwater said.

Garner was then arrested on charges of making a false report of a crime, making a false statement of evidence and failure to report a traffic accident.

Rainwater said investigators are unsure why Garner fabricated the story, but they have a couple of ideas.

"The main [theory] is that she did crash into the tree herself and for whatever reason, she didn't want the insurance company to come back at her," Rainwater said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Garner had not posted bond and remained in jail.
