Baseball: East Jackson beats No. 1 Jefferson; Hab splits with Dacula, Union wins; Bluff falls

JEFFERSON – The East Jackson baseball team stunned Class 3A top-ranked Jefferson, 2-1, Thursday afternoon at home in game one of the doubleheader. 

Jefferson (18-1, 11-1) struggled against East Jackson pitcher Josh Compton. 

Compton earned the win on the hill for the Eagles. He pitched six and one-third innings, giving up one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts. Cole Sealey grabbed the save, allowing one hit. 

Compton put the Eagles on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when he doubled to left field scoring Luke Lindsey. 

In the third, the Eagles extended their lead, 2-0, off a bases-loaded walk. Jake Varner scored

Jefferson's lone run came in the top of the seventh off a single by Mason Cooper. The hit scored Cole Watkins. 

In game two, the Dragons found the plate 12 times en route to a 12-0 win in five innings. 

Brycen Jewell picked up the win for Jefferson. He allowed one hit over three innings, striking out five. Zac Corbin threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Corbin recorded the last six outs to earn the save.


FANNIN COUNTY 6, 7,
CHEROKEE BLUFF 1, 2

Fannin County scored a combined 13 runs to sweep Cherokee Bluff in Flowery Branch Thursday afternoon.

Bluff’s offense struggled against Region 7-3A co-leader only scoring a combined three runs in the two games. 

The two losses drop the Bears (12-10, 6-6-) into a tie for the third playoff spot with Greater Atlanta Christian.

The Panthers scored 10 runs over six innings to beat White County in a non-region battle Thursday afternoon in Blairsville. 

The Panthers quickly took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but White County found some offense in the top of the fourth inning to tighten the game, 4-3. 

Union, however, scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. I Mullinack, A Scott, Z Swartz and C Rich all scored in the inning to give the Panthers an 8-3 advantage. 

Union used four pitchers to get the win with Austin Garrison earning the win. He pitched two innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits while striking out two. 

Cayden Rich was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs to lead the Panthers at the plate. 

 

HABERSHAM 4, 7,
DACULA 5, 6

Habersham Central held on in game two of the doubleheader against Region 8-6A foe Dacula to split the day's action and take the week's three-game series Thursday afternoon at home.

In game one, Dacula came out swinging to take a 3-0 first-inning lead. Habersham added a run in the second, third and fourth to tie the game, 4-4, at the end of the fourth inning. Then grabbed the lead, 5-4, in the top of the sixth inning when Jess Wilbanks singled to right field scoring Hogan Pitts. 

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Chris Smith hammered a two-run walk-off home run to give the Falcons the upset win over the Raiders. 

In game two, Habersham held off a seventh-inning charge by the Falcons.

Payton Irvin earned the win. He lasted six innings, allowing nine hits and six runs while striking out three. Logan Hare threw one inning in relief.

The Raiders slowly built a six-run lead through four innings, 7-1, before Dacula's five-run seventh inning.
