NGMC-Lumpkin on track for July opening

By B.J. Williams
Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) is on track to open its new Lumpkin County facility in the old Chestatee Regional Hospital this summer.

Hospital officials said recently they've been working toward a July 16, 2019 opening date.

NGMC spokesman Sean Couch confirmed a July opening date, saying that NGMC-Lumpkin will operate out of the old Chestatee building on Mountain Drive until a new hospital is built on Georgia 400. Couch said the new campus is slated to open in 2022.

"Once that happens, we will move the hospital operations from the Mountain Drive facility to the 400 campus," Couch said in an email statement.

Currently, NGMC operates an Urgent Care location at Georgia 400. Couch said it is possible the Urgent Care facility might be relocated, but that's a decision that will be made in the future.

Once NGMC vacates the property on Mountain Drive, making the move to Georgia 400, the University of North Georgia will take possession of the Chestatee building for the expansion of the Dahlonega campus.
