Gov. Kemp to sign fetal heartbeat bill at Tuesday ceremony

By AccessWDUN Staff

Gov. Brian Kemp will sign Georgia's LIFE Act - also known as the fetal heartbeat bill - into law on Tuesday, May 7.

A signing ceremony for House Bill 481 is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Governor's Ceremonial Office at the Georgia State Capitol in downtown Atlanta.

The measure, passed in the 2019 legislative session, prohibits abortion in Georgia once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually six weeks into a pregnancy. The Georgia ACLU has promised to sue the state to prevent the measure from taking effect.

Among those expected to attend Tuesday's ceremony are Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, House Speaker David Ralston and bill sponsors Rep. Ed Setzler and Sen. Renee Unterman.
