By AccessWDUN Staff

A fire that destroyed a chicken house in North Georgia, killing 8,500 birds, has been ruled a case of arson.

Safety Fire Commissioner Jim Beck said the chicken house was located on Old Silver Mine Road in McCaysville in Fannin County.

"One chicken house was totally destroyed and the adjacent house is lightly damaged," said Beck in a press statement. "The houses were constructed in 1985 and each is 15,200 square feet."

The fire was reported on Monday, May 6 at 8:49 a.m.

Beck asked anyone with knowledge about the fire to call the Arson Hotline at 1‐800‐282‐5804. He said rewards of up to $10,000 are available for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist(s). Investigators with the Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office are assisting the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office and the Fannin County Fire Department with the investigation.
