New artwork on grounds of North Hall fire station

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

A new piece of artwork sits on the grounds of a North Hall fire station, thanks to the residents of Lanier Village Estates.

The sculpture, which was dedicated recently, is in front of station #16 on Shirley Road and depicts an angel.

It was commissioned by the Lanier Village residents in honor of their “protective angels."

The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce's Vision 2030 program was also involved in the project, and its Executive Director, Elizabeth Higgins, says it is not the first piece of "angel" sculpture to be erected in honor of the community's first responders.

"This effort is to place 'angels', of different art media, at all the first responders locations throughout Hall County to honor our very own protective angels,” Higgins said in an email late last week.

Higgins added Lanier Village Estate heard about the initiative and began raising money and even built and installed the piece at the North Hall fire station.

"A group of about 50 attended the presentation (last Thursday), including Ted Johnson, who along with Ken Jackman, built the wooden angel," Higgins said. 'Others in attendance included Hall County commissioners, administration, fire services, Lanier Village Estates administration, and residents, and Vision 2030 Public Art committee members."

Two other "Protective Angels" have ALSO been installed.  One is at Gainesville Fire Station #1 and the other is at the Gainesville Police Department.  Higgins said both of those were made out of metal by Artist Jane Taylor.

She said anyone interested in funding future protective angels for other locations should contact her at [email protected].
