With rainfall deficits reaching as much as six to seven inches in some parts of North Georgia, drought conditions are spreading and deepening across the region.
According to this week's map from the U.S. Drought Monitor, released on Thursday, Sept. 19, nearly 65% of the state is suffering from some level of drought. Last week, just over 40% of the state was impacted by drought conditions.
Last week, Hall County - and most surrounding counties - were considered abnormally dry, the lowest level of drought. This week, the region is suffering from moderate drought. The designation means that crops are vulnerable because soil moisture is low; stream and pond levels begin to drop during times of moderate drought.
Portions of several south metro counties are under a severe drought designation.
