The depot in downtown Lula is not considered a historic structure, but it is a focal point for the small town in eastern Hall County; next week city officials will show off the first phase of renovation on the building.
The building was constructed in the 1980s by a community group, and two years ago the building and the property where it sits were donated to the city of Lula with the understanding that Lula officials would use the building for community events.
"The Council has studied alternatives and made plans to renovate and improve the building and Phase 1, which involved a major renovation of the building, is nearing completion," said Mayor Jim Grier in a public letter to the city, inviting residents to a ribbon cutting and dedication on Friday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m.
"We want to take this opportunity to celebrate the renovation of the building with the community and inform them of the beginning of Phase 2 which involves the renovation of the stage, event seating area, landscaping and additional parking," Grier said.
For those unable to attend the ribbon cutting, the city will host an open house at the renovated building on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Depot is located at 5911 Wall Street in the heart of Downtown Lula at the Athens Street Crossing of the Norfolk Southern Railway.
