A Forsyth County woman has been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder in an assault on an 86-year-old New Jersey woman earlier this week.
A report on the Cedar Grove Police Department's website said officers were called to an address on Sunrise Terrace at 4.07 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23.
When they arrived, they found the elderly victim in a bed on the second floor of the residence suffering from a number of stab wounds.
The suspect in the case, Tanya Spears, 60, of Cumming was in a first floor bedroom of the home.
"The officers quickly determined that Spears, who was a house guest, had stabbed the victim approximately 15 times," the report stated. "She was subsequently taken into custody."
The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to an area trauma center and remained in critical condition at last report.
The victim's husband, who alerted authorities, was not injured.
Spears has been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.
Detectives have not yet determined a motive for the crime.
