A Chatham County Sheriff's Office employee was fired Wednesday after a viral video surfaced of the man telling a young Spanish-speaking woman to "speak English" inside a Savannah Mcdonalds earlier this week.
According to the AJC, 19-year-old Cristina Riofrio, a student at Savannah College of Art and Design, shared a video on Twitter that showed CCSO jail maintenance mechanic Walter Browning using constant profanity and making racist remarks indicating the woman came to the United States on boat and to speak English.
Riofrio, who was speaking Spanish among her friends Saturday, recorded the confrontation and informed Browning she was doing so. Riofrio's video went viral and accumulated more than 15,000 retweets.
The end of the video showed Browning being asked to leave the fast-food chain by an employee after he admitted to being a racist and being intolerant of the young woman and her friends.
Chatham County Sheriff John Wilcher said in a news conference Thursday his office saw the video around 9:00 a.m. Wednesday and within an hour Browning was fired, the news outlet reported.
"It is just something that I will not tolerate. You've got to put your brain in gear before you put your mouth in gear," Wilcher said.
