If all goes as planned, the Georgia Department of Transportation will open the new Longstreet Bridge on U.S. 129 in Gainesville next week.
GDOT announced Jan. 8 that traffic will be shifted onto the new bridge on Thursday, Jan. 16.
The bridge replaces the old structure that spans Lake Lanier on SR 11/U.S. 129 - commonly known as Cleveland Highway.
The old bridge still must be dismantled and there's other work to be done in the area. GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland said the estimated date for all of that work to be finished is some time in September.
The bridge project was awarded to E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. in May 2017 for $34 million.
