The Georgia Department of Transportation will have a change of leadership in its District 1-Northeast Georgia office in the new year after District 1 Engineer Brandon Kirby announced his retirement.
In a Friday morning email, Kirby said he would be stepping down from the post he assumed in April 2019. Kirby was named to the position following the retirement of Brent Cook.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the citizens of northeast Georgia over my career - including public officials," Kirby wrote. "I have a servant's heart and am thankful for all the successes we’ve had and the relationships that have been built. I look forward to the opportunities ahead."
Kirby, who has worked for GDOT for more than two decades, did not elaborate on his future plans.
GDOT Director of Strategic Communications Scott Higley confirmed Kirby's retirement effective Feb. 1, 2020.
According to Higley, Rob Mabry will serve as Acting District Engineer for the 21-county region.
