A rainy forecast has delayed the opening of the new Longstreet Bridge north of Gainesville this week.
The Georgia Department of Transportation had planned to open the new bridge this Thursday, Jan. 16, but the opening has now been delayed for one week.
"Final elements required to allow traffic on the bridge include striping, which cannot be completed during wet weather," said GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland in a press statement.
The new bridge on State Route 11/U.S. 129 - known locally as Cleveland Highway - replaces the old bridge, which was built in 1956.
Strickland said the project was awarded to E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. in May 2017 for the contract amount of $34 million.
