The Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office apprehended a suspect who fled from authorities following a traffic stop near the University of North Georgia Dahlonega campus Saturday evening.
UNG spokeswoman Sylvia Carson said as a precautionary measure, the campus was briefly placed on lockdown at 5:45 p.m. until Seth Thompson was arrested minutes later.
"UNG Public Safety briefly locked-down the Dahlonega Campus while law enforcement officers pursued an individual who ran from Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office personnel following a traffic stop near campus," Carson said in an email statement. "The suspect was not affiliated with UNG and was believed to be armed."
According to Lt. Alan Roach, the initial incident occurred around 5 p.m. when a deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Thompson's vehicle on Morrison Moore Parkway West at the intersection of Sunset Drive - that's when he took off on foot towards UNG.
According to the police report, the deputy's K9 partner Semmy tracked Thompson to the Bellamy Apartments where he was eventually arrested.
In the report, it details that Thompson fled from deputies because of outstanding warrants. He now faces a single charge of Obstruction in conjunction with the outstanding warrants.
