Blue check responsibility

By Martha Zoller Host, Morning Talk

I watch a great deal of politics. Yes, it is a sickness with me. However, for this cycle, I have changed to watching live events for myself and then not watching any panels because I am smart enough to know what I saw and to analyze it myself. I know this is a paradox as I am a talk host and talk about news in my work life. I do try to include all sides and it is more of a conversation with friends.

I was watching a debate last night. One of the candidates called another candidate out for personal things said about each other. The other candidate said they had never “said” any of those things. It got me thinking. What qualifies as “saying?” Or more clearly, are we responsible for what the “blue check” verified social media accounts say about anything? Is it the same as you saying it? This is a real question.

It is true that the candidate denying saying those things has not personally uttered the words. It is also true their “blue check” verified social media accounts slung that mud and surrogates speaking on behalf of the candidate with the candidate in the room said those things. What are we responsible for?

I wear a lot of hats in politics. My name is on every one. Many times there are press releases with quotes from me and the tag, “said Martha Zoller…” Also, all my social media accounts (and I am not a “blue check” person, just a person who uses her real name on everything) have my name on them and believe me, I take the praise and the heat for what I say. My personal cell phone hasn’t changed in over 25 years and it is out there and I have the same email address since 2003. I’m available to speak to or tweet at directly. I will block you if you use profanity, however.

So please email me at [email protected] with your thoughts.
