A man from Baldwin was killed in an morning rush hour traffic accident on Monday, Nov. 2.

The Georgia State Patrol was called to the scene of the accident on Athens Highway (SR 11) near Plesant Hill Drive in the Talmo area at 7:07 a.m.

"A 2005 Mercury Mariner was traveling south on State Route 11 when its driver failed to maintain the vehicle’s proper lane of travel while negotiating a left-hand curve," said Cpl. Neil Frankel in an email statement. "The vehicle then traveled off the roadway and onto the west shoulder where the vehicle struck a mailbox as it began to travel down the west embankment of State Route 11."

Frankel said the vehicle then traveled down the embankment, striking a concrete barrier and overturning.

The victim, Robert Allberry, 75, died at the scene.

Allberry was wearing a seat belt, and there is no indication he was impaired at the time, according to Frankel.

No other vehicles were involved.
