North Georgia communities plan ceremonies, programs for Veterans Day 2020

By AccessWDUN Staff

While some events may be scaled back this year, communities around North Georgia still plan to pay tribute to area servicemen and servicewomen for Veterans Day 2020.

Veterans Day is held every year on Nov. 11 to commemorate the "11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" of 1918, the day that signaled the end of World War I. At the time, the day was known as Armistice Day, but President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized a name change to Veterans Day in 1954. The day is set aside to pay tribute to all veterans of America's armed forces.

The following events are scheduled over the next several days in honor of veterans who live in North Georgia:

Saturday, Nov. 7

9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Grant-Reeves VFW and Auxiliary Post 7720 Cornelia will continue its Buddy Poppy Drive at Quality Foods in Cornelia. The fundraising effort will continue on Wednesday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. at Walmart in Cornelia. The monies raised from the drive go to the local VFW relief fund to assist local veterans and their families in times of need.

11 a.m.
3rd Annual Salute to Veterans Car Show
Union County Farmers Market in Blairsville

Sunday, Nov. 8

11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Veterans Day Cruz-in
201 Wills Road in Alpharetta
Presented by American Legion Post 201

Wednesday, Nov. 11

10 a.m.
Veterans Park in Lula
The program this year is a bit shorter because of restrictions that remain during the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the community is encouraged to attend, practice social distancing, wear a face mask and salute those veterans who have given so much of themselves for our freedoms.

11 a.m.
Freedom Park in Cleveland
American Legion Post 16 Cleveland will hold a ceremony with a color guard, Junior ROTC, Knights of Columbus and White County Middle School essay winners, among others. Community members are encouraged to attend.

12 p.m.
The University of North Georgia Dahlonega campus
Two events are planned for the day. The first is a short ceremony with the Corps of Cadets on the Gen. William "Lipp" Livesy Drill Field. The Patriot Choir and Golden Eagle Band will perform. Veterans on campus and the Dahlonega area are invited to attend. All attendees are asked to wear masks and observe social distancing. Afterward, the National Roll Call will transition to an online event. Follow this link for complete details.

5 p.m.
Habersham Wall of Honor
Sponsored by the Grant-Reeves Post 7720 of the VFW in Cornelia
A tent will be set up for the short program, but anyone who wants to sit during the ceremony should bring a chair.
