Woman hit by car on Thompson Bridge Road remains in critical condition

By B.J. Williams

A woman trying to cross Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville Friday night was critically injured when she was hit by a vehicle.

Lt. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department said the accident happened around 7:30 p.m. near Etta Vista Circle, in an area where a convenience store is located. Police believe that's where the woman was going when she was struck.

"Speaking with witnesses, it appears she was traveling in the direction to the Chevron store there," Holbrook said.

The driver of the SUV that struck the woman stopped to help.

"The driver did stop, rendered aid and they were very cooperative in the investigation," Holbrook said. "They've been working with us to determine the actual circumstances surrounding this [accident]."

Holbrook pointed out that the area where the accident happened is in a curve in the road, plus it was already dark.

"Sadly and unfortunately...there's a crosswalk just up the road," he said.

Holbrook said they are not releasing the name of the 59-year-old woman until her relatives can be notified. As of Saturday morning, she remained hospitalized in critical condition at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
