We are in a political season. There’s no doubt about that. And in the age of social media, you think you have to have an opinion on everything. I rarely respond to comments made toward me on social media because it is really an echo chamber and a much smaller universe that people think. That is the reason I do not think news organizations should use “trending on Twitter” as a news item. Yesterday, one comment came through that made me think.
Let’s back up a bit.
Last week, I had three big interviews. One with Sen. David Perdue, one with Sen. Kelly Loeffler and one with Congressman Doug Collins (who is running against Sen. Loeffler). It was a pretty good week. I take the opportunity for listeners to hear from folks they’ve elected and it just so happened these three were close together and happened in the same week. After they aired, the process is the whole show ends up in the podcasts for a week as part of the Listen Live section of AccessWDUN. For certain interviews, we pull them out of the whole show and put them in a section called “Show Clips.” I will generally Tweet them out also. That’s what I did on Friday.
In addition, the Loeffler and Perdue team contacted me and asked for the link so they could share also. That’s not uncommon. After I did that, I let the Collins team know how they could access the interview so all the bases were covered.
We share content once it has aired because it is public and out there anyway. It’s the common thing to do in today’s world of always-available audio and video.
There was a comment made that implied something about my motives. It really does not matter what the implication was but, here is the question it raised in my mind?
Can’t we have different points of view, support different people without there being something nefarious behind it? Can’t we just have differences in opinion?
I think we can and it should start now. I’ll tell you who I support and why. I’ll be fair to the people I don’t support, because ultimately, we are on the same team—the American team. I think we can do it! What do you think?
