*A new scholarship at North Georgia Technical College will benefit students enrolled in the Agriculture program at the school.  The Hugh and Doris Taylor Memorial Agriculture Scholarship has been established through a contribution from Mr. & Mrs. Taylor’s daughters, Kay Taylor Powell and Carol Taylor Parker. *Jackson County and East Jackson comprehensive high schools were among those recognized by the Georgia Department of Education recently for success in Advanced Placement exam performance and participation.

*The White County Republican Party’s monthly meeting will be Feb. 17 at 6:30 in the Roy Ash Community Room in Cleveland.  Rebecca Yardley, 9th District Chairman for the Georgia GOP, will be giving an overview of the process of becoming a delegate or alternate during the convention cycle. 

*Two teams from the Gainesville City School System, those representing Centennial Arts and Gainesville Exploration Academy, have advanced to the North Regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition to be held Feb. 29 at Pickens County High School in Jasper. The top two schools from that competition will then advance to the Divisional Bowl in Atlanta in March.

*A “lane shift” is planned this week on the State Route 13 widening project in Buford.  The Georgia DOT says the shift is currently scheduled for Thursday.  Crews will move traffic onto new lanes in order to continue their paving.

*Life University at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto recently conferred degrees upon fifteen inmates who earned their Associate of Arts degree in Positive Human Development and Social Change. The degrees are offered through the Chillon Project, an initiative of Life University’s Center for Compassion, Integrity and Secular Ethics.
