Football: Luttrell resigns as Johnson coach; takes same post at Hebron Christian

OAKWOOD — Johnson athletics director Tony Wagner finds himself on the hunt for another head football coach for the second year in a row.

After one season, Stan Luttrell resigned to take the same position at Hebron Christian Academy, replacing Jeff Saturday.

According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, the six-time Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl XLI champion Saturday announced his decision to step down over the weekend after six years in charge. He will remain involved with the program in some capacity. Saturday also is an NFL analyst for ESPN.

Wagner made the Luttrell announcement official on Tuesday afternoon, 20 minutes after Luttrell addressed the team.

"We appreciate the time Coach Luttrell was at Johnson and we wish him well in moving forward," he said. "At this time, we will focus on our search for a head coach who will keep the program moving forward in a positive direction."

Luttrell guided the Knights to a 4-6 record, including breaking a six-game losing streak to arch-rival West Hall in the annual Battle of Oakwood and just missing their first playoff berth since 2004, in his one season at the helm of the program.

The search is now a zero blitz for Wagner and principal Jonathan Edwards.

Wagner said he's looking for a high-character coach with exceptional integrity to take over.

"We want a coach to pour into the kids and is going to love them," he said. "We’re not just going to build a better football player; we’re going to build a better young man. That character piece is going to be our first thing. Obviously (we want) a great teacher. If you’re a great teacher, you’re a great coach. We want a worker. Someone that will dive into the community and be a part of it, be invested in the entire program, not just their program. I'm anxious to get started to talking to the people that want to be the next head Knight."
