By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Gainesville and the rest of Georgia were up in January.

That's according to information released last week by the Georgia Department of Labor.

Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says jobless applications in Georgia increased 31.2 percent from December to January; in Gainesville, there was a 108.5 percent increase. In fact, only Albany, of the state's 14 metropolitan areas, showed a decrease,13.4 percent.
