GHSA extends its suspension of all athletic and academic events

The high school athletic season is all but canceled at this point.

The Georgia High School Association announced in a statement on Thursday that it will follow Gov. Brian Kemp's orders to further delay the return to school and athletics until at least April 27.

The decision comes on the heels of the most recent extension of school closure on Tuesday by the governor.

"I am sure most of you know by now that Gov. Kemp on Thursday extended the mandatory closing of all schools through April 24," GHSA Executive Director Robin Hines said. "Obviously, the GHSA will follow this edict and we remind our member schools that all practices and contests remain suspended until at least April 24."

The GHSA was supposed to meet on Friday to discuss plans on athletic schedules if school resumes, but Hines said there is no need for the meeting now.

"No, there’s no hurry with the Governor’s extension of school closures," Hines said.

Kemp will most likely make a decision on whether the state's public schools will return to school at all prior to April 24.

"Therefore at or before that time, the GHSA office will inform our member schools of a decision regarding resuming spring sports and activities," Hines said. "These are, of course, unprecedented times that call for unprecedented actions and our main concern remains the safety of all student-athletes, their families and fans.

The GHSA is at a crossroads with a decision especially when it comes to baseball and soccer. The regular season is supposed to end for soccer on April 16 and baseball on April 18.
