Former North Hall coach Mongero talks MLB Draft, end of spring sports

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

AccessWDUN caught up with former North Hall and current Glynn Academy baseball coach Trent Mongero to discuss the effects of the state, and most of the nation, calling off spring sports and its impact on the upcoming MLB Draft.

Mongero, also a part-time assistant scout with the Boston Red Sox, offered some unique insights into what major league teams look for and the state of baseball in general.

MLB is shortening the draft (rumor has five rounds but could be more, no one is sure yet) and will be eliminating some minor league teams in an effort to streamline costs and consolidate talent.

Mongero was the coach of North Hall when the Trojans captured the 2017 Class 3A state title. He also discussed the sudden and disappointing end to the GHSA spring season and what the future holds.

“My heart breaks for the seniors all over the state who had the rug pulled out from under them on their final year,” Mongero said. “It’s been really emotional talking with that group about not having a season and I’m sure it’s been like that for every coach in the state.”
