By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

DAWSONVILLE — Steve Sweat is officially calling it quits after almost four decades coaching basketball.

The long-time Dawson County girls basketball coach announced his complete retirement from teaching and coaching on Tuesday.

Sweat retired from teaching in 2015 but remained on as a 49-percent employee while coaching basketball.

The Lady Tigers finished 14-14 in his final season and a first-round playoff berth.

Sweat had two stints at Dawson County, leading the program to the final four three times, including an appearance in the Class A state title game, in the early 90s.

Since returning to Dawson County in 2006, Sweat has led the Lady Tigers to Class 3A state title game in 2013, the quarterfinals three times, the second round twice and the first round of the tournament two times.

In between Dawson County, Sweat coached the boys team at Berkmar and at West Hall. He led the Lady Spartans to state title game in 1999 and four straight Lanierland titles.
