Two Pickens County residents face charges for their alleged roles in the 2019 arson of two residential campers.

Jasper residents Jason Fowler, 21, and Ramona Buchanan, 43, were arrested this week with the assistance of the state's Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office.

A release sent to local media Friday evening said the arrests stem from the pair's alleged involvement in setting fire to residential campers last August and October.

“The first fire occurred in August of 2019 off of Marblehead Road in Marble Hill," said Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King. "The second fire occurred two months later in October of 2019 off of Pulltight Road in Marble Hill.”

King said both fires were set to campers that were being used as primary residences.

Fowler has bonded out after being  booked into the Pickens County Jail on April 22. Buchanan was booked into the jail the following day and remains in custody at last report.

Buchanan faces two counts of Arson in the First Degree and two counts of Felony Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, while Fowler faces one count of Criminal Damage to Property in the Second Degree.

First Degree Arson is a felony punishable by a fine of no more than $50,000 or by a prison term between one and 20 years, or both.

The release said the investigation was carried out by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and the Pickens County Fire Department, who were assisted by the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office.

So far, Georgia's Fire Investigations Unit has assisted in 32 arrests this calendar year.
