Football: Former North Hall assistant Rob Kellogg dies

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

If there's one thing that stands out about former North Hall assistant football and baseball coach Rob Kellogg, he was an outstanding person.

North Hall football coach David Bishop, and former coaches Bob Christmas (head football), Trent Mongero (head baseball) and Ronnie Eaves (assistant football) all spoke fondly of Kellogg on Tuesday, using words like kind, humble, outspoken about his faith, true family man and a great friend.

Kellogg, 59, died unexpectedly on Tuesday and was the head football coach at Mountain View High School in Gwinnett County. But his coaching tour made a stop at North Hall where he coached football and baseball from 2009-2011 under Christmas and Mongero.

Before North Hall, he spent 15 years coaching in the Georgia Independent School Association.

North Hall football coach David Bishop was the offensive coordinator during those years and said the former Trojan secondary coach "was one of the "good" guys."

"Rob was a humble and kind person," Bishop said. "He loved the players, coaches, his students and always spoke about his family. He was one of the “good” guys. He will be missed."

Christmas, who led the Trojans to 105 wins and nine state playoff berths in his 13 seasons at the helm, said Kellogg was "a tremendous asset" to the staff.

"Rob worked with us 3 years at North Hall," Christmas said. "He was a tremendous asset to our staff. He was a hard worker and related well to the other coaches and to the players. He will be missed."

Ronnie Eaves, the current defensive coordinator at Collins High School in Collins, Miss., was the leader of the Trojan defense back then and said he loved working with Kellogg.

"He was the ultimate professional, always on time, prepared and easy to work with," he said. "The players loved him."

Kellogg also was a baseball guy, having won two GISA state titles with Brookwood School and Fullington Academy.

Mongero, who led the Trojans to the 2017 Class 3A state title, said Kellogg was instrumental in helping lay the winning foundation for his program at North Hall.

"In fact, he was coaching with me the first time we took a team to the state playoffs," he said. "Within three years of that, we were playing for a state championship. He was very outspoken in his faith and really brought a stable figure into the coaching staff, in addition to myself, that could help guide us to winning. So, he really did help lay the foundation for the program."

Mongero also said what stood out most to him about Kellogg was the love he had for his wife and family.

"Of all the people I've ever met, he treasured his wife like I've never witnessed before or since," he said. "That made such a big impression on me. What a good example it was to see married couples to be so in love after so many years. My heart goes out to his wife, his family, players and the school. I'll always remember my days with Rob because he helped build the winning tradition that still exists to this day. He was a dear friend."

Kellogg is survived by his wife Linda, daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Ryan and granddaughter, Kailin.

He was 12-10 overall in his two seasons as a head football coach and led Mountain View to back-to-back Class 7A playoff appearances.
