Nine COVID-19 specimen collection sites operated by Augusta University and the Georgia National Guard are closing effective this Saturday, including one site in Northeast Georgia.

The Rock Creek Park location in Dawson County is being closed as Augusta University transitions its focus to research and development of new non-invasive testing options, according to Dave Palmer with District 2 Public Health.

"The Georgia Department of Public Health will continue to operate 136 specimen collection sites throughout the state, and encourages Georgians wanting to be tested for COVID-19 to contact their local health department to
schedule an appointment," he said Saturday in a new release sent to local media.

Palmer said the National Guard will continue to provide staffing and logistical help at Department of Public Health collection sites, as well as its mission of assisting with testing residents and staff in long-term care facilities.

Anyone wanting to be tested for COVID-19 should contact their local health department to schedule an appointment, using contact information that can be found at dph.ga.gov.

More than 44,000 people have been tested at Augusta University and partnered sites to date.
