Even though demonstrations over the killing of George Floyd of Minneapolis were orderly in Lawrenceville over the weekend, the mayor and city council have imposed a curfew on the city for Monday night.
Mayor David Still and the City Council issued a press statement saying the curfew will begin at 9 p.m. on June 1. Still said it is possible the curfew could be extended into Tuesday and Wednesday.
Additionally, City Hall will close to the public at 3 p.m. Monday, June 1. All public meetings currently on the city calendar have been rescheduled for the week of June 8-12, 2020.
"The safety of our citizens and employees is our top priority,” said Still. “The City of Lawrenceville supports peaceful and respectful protests, and our police department will continue to ensure the safety of the protesters, the public, and prevent property damage in our city."
There was no property damage or injuries associated with Sunday protests in the city limits. Social media posts indicate another demonstration is set for 5 p.m. Monday at Lawrenceville City Hall.
