THOMASTON — Wednesday could be the day the state's sports fans, players, and coaches learn whether the Georgia High School Association's plan to begin playing sports as early as Thursday (girls fastpitch softball) is still on track.
GHSA Executive Director Robin Hines said Monday he and the organization's sports-medicine advisory committee will discuss with the Georgia Department of Public Health and that group's concerns about conducting fall sports.
Northeast Georgia area athletic directors are expecting some changes but none had any real insight as to whether the meeting between Hines, the sports-medicine committee, and the state's health department would produce any recommendationsto continue along as planned (softball is set to open play on Thursday), perhaps pushing back starting dates again, or even recommending calling off the fall sports season.
In another story on Tuesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Decatur High Schools, due to COVID-19 concerns, will cancel three football games in September as well as all in-person sports and extracurricular activities until Sept. 25.
The football games canceled are Sept. 4 vs. Dunwoody, Sept. 11 vs. Wesleyan and Sept. 18 vs. Banneker -- all non-region games.
The AccessWDUN sports department will montior the meeting on Wednesday and update any changes that come down from the GHSA, or the state health department, or both.
