By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio

CLEVELAND – White County residents in a two-mile area were able to return home about two hours after a gas leak at Georgia Mountain Gas forced their evacuation Monday.

“Approximately 2,800 gallons of liquid propane leaked from a broken valve on a delivery truck,” a statement from White County Public Safety reads.

Georgia Mountain Gas is located on Holiness Campground Road near Mary Davidson Road in eastern White County.

Firefighters from White County Fire Station 2, Station 4, White County EMS and White County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call, received just before 1 p.m.

Residents were alerted via the CodeRed emergency alert system to evacuate the area and a shelter was established at the White County Park and Recreation Department on Asbestos Road north of Cleveland.

Firefighters went door to door and assisted residents in the immediate area with evacuation. Several roads in the area closed, including Holiness Campground Road, which runs between Ga. 115 and Ga. 254.

Mutual aid was requested from Hall County Fire Station 2 and the Hall County Hazmat team.

The Hall County Hazmat team was canceled as the leak was contained before their arrival.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:12 p.m. and residents were allowed to return home.

No injuries were reported.
