Nearly three dozen dogs that had been living in two sheds on a property in Stephens County are now in the hands of the Atlanta Humane Society.
Officials with the Toccoa-Stephens County Animal Shelter reported on the agency's Facebook page that they were called Wednesday to a property in the county about some dogs that needed help.
"We mobilized to the location and the owner surrendered 33 dogs to us," the post said. "In order to avoid having to euthanize any dogs, due to not having enough space, we made a call to the Atlanta Humane Society. The Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter would not have been able to provide the care and attention that they will need to be well, both physically and emotionally. We are very grateful that the Atlanta Humane Society was there for us!"
In the thread of comments on the original Facebook post, Animal Shelter officials said the county marshal opted not to file charges against the property owner.
Additional information indicated most of the dogs were adults.
The Atlanta Humane Society posted information about the case on its website, saying most of the dogs had urine-stained fur and many had scars likely from fights over food. The dogs had lived in two sheds and a trailer. The Atlanta Humane Society will release the animals for adoption in the near future.
