LISTEN: GEMA Director Chris Stallings talks vaccines ahead of Monday site openings

By Morning Talk

Starting Monday, Feb. 22, the state opens up four locations where COVID-19 vaccinations can be administered to thousands of Georgians in a short period of time. One of the sites is the Habersham County Fairgrounds in Clarkesville.

Habersham County Manager Phil Sutton said in a press statement this past week that county officials are glad to accommodate officials from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) as they set up the facility.

"I am excited for our county to take part in such an important process," said Sutton. “We are ready to get started.”

On Friday, GEMA officials were busy coordinating the set-up at the fairgrounds at 4235 Toccoa Highway.

All four mass vaccination sites will operate in the same format, even though the facilities are all very different, according to GEMA Director Chris Stallings. Anyone who is vaccinated at one of the sites first will have to register at myvaccinegeorgia.com and scan a QR code once an appointment is verified.

"The system is the same," Stallings told WDUN in a radio interview Friday morning. "It's a drive-up site - you're not required to get out of your car...when you pull up, a vaccinator will scan your QR code, it will load your information, they'll be able to then give you the vaccine."

Stallings said when the vaccination website launched Thursday evening, there were over a million "hits" for information.

The drive-thru sites have the capacity to vaccinate 1,100 people per day at each of the four sites. Stallings said that will allow the state to vaccinate as many as 22,000 people per week among the four locations.

Georgia Emergency Management Agency Director Chris Stallings joined WDUN's "Morning Talk with Martha Zoller" Friday to talk about the new COVID-19 vaccine website in the state.
