Even though the Gwinnett County Police Department had not received specific threats against any Asian-owned businesses in the county, officers increased patrols in light of Tuesday's deadly shootings at three spas in Cherokee County and the city of Atlanta.
A statement from the department indicated the extra patrols would focus particularly on spas.
"Although there are no known threats at this time, these patrols will continue for the foreseeable future for the safety and comfort of the community," the statement said. "If anyone sees something that may appear suspicious or potentially criminal in nature, they are encouraged to call the police immediately."
Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Hendrickson issued a statement, as well, saying she requested the additional patrols.
"Gwinnett County is home to metro Atlanta’s largest Asian American and Pacific Islander community. In an abundance of caution, I have asked Gwinnett Police Chief Brett West to heighten our police presence by increasing patrols in and around our AAPI businesses and communities. The safety of our residents will always be our top priority," Hendrickson said.
Six of the eight people who were killed in Tuesday's attacks were of Asian descent.
