The children of First Baptist Church of Cornelia held a Bike-A-Thon for Missions on May 23, raising more than $4,000 to build a playground for children in Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
For 15 years, FBC Cornelia has partnered with First Baptist Church of Matagalpa, and as the children learned this year about missions, they decided to put their lessons into action by raising money for a playground at Calvary Chapel and Re-Nutrition Center outside of Matagalpa.
According to information provided by the children's ministry at FBC Cornelia, the children set an initial goal of $1,500 for the project, and they had just one week to raise money from their family, friends and FBC Cornelia church members. At the Bike-A-Thon for Missions, the children turned in the money they raised and then rode one lap for every $5 raised. Any child who raised $100 or more was able to “pie” a member of the children’s committee and because the children exceeded their goal, several of them were able to “pie” their new Interim Children’s Minister Jameson Deering.
