COVID hospitalizations at NGHS facilities approach April 2020 peak

By AccessWDUN Staff

COVID hospitalizations at Northeast Georgia Health System facilities are now approaching the level of the first peak in April 2020.

Data from NGHS shows 152 COVID hospitalizations on Sunday. The first peak in April 2020 saw 159 patients being treated in-house for COVID. The current information shows 83% of those being treated in the local hospitals are unvaccinated. The average age of the patients is 59.

Based on the raw data, it appears the increased COVID hospitalizations are placing a strain on ICU bed space. On Sunday, just six ICU beds were open at the Gainesville hospital and just 2 were open at the Braselton campus.

A month ago on July 8, 2021 there were 15 COVID  patients being treated in NGHS facilities; this time last week, there were 110.

NGHS doctors last week predicted the current surge in cases will not peak until September.
