With confirmed cases of COVID-19 soaring in schools, officials with the Jackson County School System have decided two high schools will make the switch to virtual learning on Monday, Aug. 31.
Students at Jackson County High School and East Jackson Comprehensive High School will learn online for two weeks.
April Briscoe, spokeswoman for the school system, said COVID cases and quarantine numbers are impacting every segment of the school system population.
"It's a combination. For example, we have many bus drivers out and not enough substitute teachers," Briscoe said.
Four schools in the system are now under mask mandates in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. Those schools are Maysville Elementary, North Jackson Elementary, West Jackson Middle and East Jackson Middle.
The Jackson County School System population is 10,548. Since the onset of school on July 30, a total of 394 cases have been confirmed system wide. Each week, the rate of spread has increased rapidly.
Case numbers are posted weekly to the district website, according to Briscoe. The next update is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 27.
