The accused at-fault driver in a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a baby has been released on bond from the Hall County Jail as the investigation into the wreck continues.
Rigoberto Osorio-Colin, 26, of Gainesville reportedly was driving on Queen City Parkway the night of Aug. 13, 2021 without his headlights on when he crashed into another vehicle that was attempting to turn onto Aviation Boulevard. Investigators said the victims' vehicle had the right-of-way at the time of the collision.
"During the collision, a five-month-old baby girl was ejected from the SUV and suffered visible injuries," said Hall County Sheriff's Office spokesman Derreck Booth in an email statement. "A passing taxi driver drove the three SUV occupants, including the infant and two adults, to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The baby was then flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for treatment."
Osorio-Colin fled from the scene on foot, according to Booth, but he then called authorities to report his vehicle had been stolen.
Detectives were able to connect the dots, realizing Osorio-Colin was describing the vehicle that had been abandoned at the scene of the crash. The suspect was arrested at a residence on Broadway Place the following morning.
Osorio-Colin was charged with the following traffic-related offenses:
- Reckless driving, first offense
- Duty to make immediate reports of accidents
- DUI – Alcohol
- Driving while unlicensed or expired
- Duty to stop at accident (hit and run, leaving scene)
- Failure to yield to vehicle turning left
- Headlights and other lights required
Osorio-Colin posted $15,560 bond and was released from the Hall County Jail on Saturday, Aug. 21.
Booth said the baby has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The infant’s mother, who was a passenger in the SUV, suffered minor injuries in the accident. Neither driver was hurt
