Fire severely damaged a home in Bethlehem Tuesday morning. Around 11:30 a.m. the fire on Loganville Hwy was reported and Barrow County Emergency Services (BCES) crews from four area fire stations responded. When they arrived, fire and smoke were seen coming from the front, right corner of the home.
Neighbors weren’t sure if anyone was home, so fire crews searched for anyone inside. The home was empty except for a dog found on the back porch. The dog was put in the care of animal control officers while fire crews worked to extinguish the flames.
The efforts by fire crews were severely hampered by the weather. Strong winds were moving through because of the tropical storm, feeding the fire. It took about 20 minutes for the fire to be extinguished.
The heavy rains also made it a challenge, as firetruck drivers had to be careful not to get stuck in the mud. It was also a challenge to get access to water up the long driveway. Traffic on Loganville Hwy had to be diverted around the hose that was running from the hydrant to the scene.
“The weather and difficult access to the home presented challenges, but BCES crews were able to contain the fire to the room of origin and a surrounding kitchen area," said Lt. Steve Rose. "The entire left side of the structure was saved but did receive smoke and water damage.”
Two firefighters received minor injuries during operations and left the scene to seek medical attention.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
