Football: Big Red one win away from completing mission

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

Gainesville coach Josh Niblett and the Gainesville football team always knew it was possible.

Niblett's promise to the City of Gainesville almost a year ago is still intact, and it will be delivered entirely if the No. 3-ranked Red Elephants beat top-ranked Hughes on Friday at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta.

Still, whether or not the Red Elephants hoist the Class 6A championship on Friday, Niblett and his staff have already turned this program around in just one season.

Niblett quickly turned the possibility of making the title game question at the reporters surrounding him on the field at McEachern High School Friday.

"Y'all need to ask that. That's y'all's question," Niblett said. "We always think it's possible. If I didn't think it was possible, then why did we start the year off? So, y'all are probably the ones that didn't know or think we wouldn't get there."

Big Red held off Roswell's second-half charge, 35-28, to clinch a spot in the championship game. READ STORY HERE

Quez Sims dropped Roswell's Chris Elko for a 9-yard loss on a 2nd-and-goal from the Gainesville 1-yard line to seal the Red Elephant win.

"It’s been special, and this is a special group,” Niblett said after the game. "That was a huge play (by Quez). It put them back some more. The guys just never quit. I'm so proud of these kids right now."

Friday night's Class 6A state title game can be heard live on AM 550 and FM 102.9 WDUN.
