Planning commission approves RV and boat storage complex on McEver Road

The Hall County Planning Commission voted Monday night in unanimous approval of a rezoning for an RV and boat storage facility on McEver Road.

The storage complex will be located at the curve where Silverthorn Drive meets McEver Road. Engineer Myles Montgomery and other applicants from Anchor Inn RV & Boat Storage presented plans to the commission, seeking a rezoning of 9.06 acres from Agricultural Residential III to Highway Business. Along with that, the applicants also requested a conditional use permit for the storage facility. Anchor Inn hopes to expand its existing business property, situated just east of the land in question.

Hall County planning staff recommended approval of the rezoning as well as the conditional use permit prior to Monday night’s commission meeting. The planning commission moved forward with the staff’s recommendations, adding several conditions for Anchor Inn to adhere to as they design and construct the facility.

Several neighboring homeowners spoke against the rezoning, saying that Gainesville has no need for additional RV and boat storage. While it remained uncertain if the facility would devalue nearby property, several citizens expressed this concern. Another major point of interest was the visual impact. Locals affirmed their desire to require Anchor Inn to build a privacy fence, plant trees, or at minimum use appealing architecture on the road-facing sides of the storage buildings.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners will have the final vote on the rezoning on January 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hall County Government Center.
