A Lawrenceville police officer was one of two people hospitalized following a shooting incident in Gwinnett County on Wednesday.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is leading the investigation into the shooting, which occurred at a mental health facility in Lawrenceville.
The preliminary information indicates that around 10:40 p.m., Lawrenceville P.D. received a call about an unruly patient at Summit Ridge Behavioral Health Hospital, 250 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville," the GBI said in a Thursday press release. "When officers arrived, they encountered Austin Collins, age 20, in a fenced area at the back of the facility."
Collins allegedly attacked one of the officers, eventually gaining possession of his handgun. A second officer on scene then shot Collins.
Although exact details are unclear, the GBI said the first officer was also shot during the incident, although it is unknown if Collins or the unnamed second officer fired that particular round.
"Collins and the injured officer were taken to Northside Gwinnett Hospital," the GBI said. "Collins is in critical condition. The officer is in stable condition."
Following the GBI's investigation into the shooting, their case file will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
