Baseball playoffs: Commerce blasts Irwin Co. to advance to Class A Public quarterfinals; Bluff falls in Game 3 to Pierce Co.

COMMERCE, Ga. — After getting blown out in Game 2 of the second round of the Class A Public playoffs on Wednesday, Commerce returned the favor with a 9-1 win over Irwin County at home on Thursday. 

With the win, the Tigers win the series, 2-1, and advance to the quarterfinals of the Class A Public playoffs. They will play host to Emmanuel County Institute on Tuesday in a best of three series. 

Brayton Purcell was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the 6th inning to blow open the game, 9-0, for the Tigers. Hampton Hutto had a good day at the plate for the Tigers as well, going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs. 

Commerce opened the scoring with a two-run second inning to go up, 2-0. They added another run in the third and two in the fourth. 

Irwin County didn't score until the top of the 7th inning. 

Coy Argo tossed six 2-hitless, one-run innings to earn the win on the mound. He also struck out three.

CHEROKEE BLUFF 5

With Cherokee Bluff leading 2-0, Pierce County scored eight straight runs -- four in the third and four in the fourth -- to take control en route to the win at home on Thursday in Game 3 of the Class 3A playoffs.

With the loss, Cherokee Bluff is eliminated in the second round Class 3A playoffs. 

Jacob Vokal led the Bluff with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Caleb Miele was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Caleb Piland, Bryce England, Brett House and Kaden Thompson all had one hit on the day.
