Volleyball: GHS opens new digs with a pair of wins

GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville girls volleyball opened its new home -- the Student Activities Center -- with a pair of wins in a quad-match on Tuesday.

The Lady Red Elephants began with a tough 2-1 win over West Hall (25-6, 20-25, 15-6) and then staged a huge rally to beat Loganville Christian.
In the second match, Loganville Christian took the first 25-21 and led 21-13 in the second before the Lady Red Elephants won 13 of the next 16 points to take the set 26-24 and then closed out the match 15-12 in the third.

However, Oconee County ended Gainesville’s bid for a perfect night taking a 25-13, 25-10 sweep in the finale.

Gainesville was led by senior Kerrigan Gruhn with 21 kills, 5 aces, and 5 digs. Senior Jay Maldonado added 20 digs and an ace.  

Senior Makenzy Butler had 8 digs and 4 aces, Avery Lindsey had 33 assists, 5 aces, and 12 digs, Hannah Stewart had 13 kills and 2 digs, and senior Caroline Reisman added 5 kills and an ace.  Maddie Hinshaw had 15 assists, an ace, and 7 digs, and Taylor Reid added 5 kills and 3 digs.

Kailyn Haven had 3 kills, 2 blocks, and 2 aces, senior Natalie Brown ended with 2 blocks, 1 dig, and 6 kills, and  Kathy Huynh added a dig for the Lady Red Elephants.

Gainesville next travels to Flowery Branch on Thursday to play in a tri-match with the Lady Falcons  and Dawson County.
