With the conclusion of just the second week of the 2022 season, only five Northeast Georgia-area teams improved to 2-0 to remain unbeaten.
Buford, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Lanier Christian, Lumpkin County and Rabun County all moved to 2-0 on the season with big wins on Friday.
The Class 7A No. 1-ranked Wolves dispatched Mallard Creek (NC) 56-7 behind another solid performance from senior running back Justin Haynes and a young but stingy defense. The Red Elephants stayed perfect, holding off Class 7A Mountain View, 30-7, in their home opener at City Park.
Lanier Christian continued its early offensive barrage with a 70-0 rout of the North Georgia Falcons (a home-school program) at home. Rabun County got by a tough Stephens County squad in a 14-7 win in a defensive battle in Tiger.
But the surprise team still in the early going is Lumpkin County. The Indians knocked off Union County 28-6 in Blairsville for their first 2-0 start since 2011, when current Cherokee Bluff coach Tommy Jones was leading the program.
Several teams got their first wins of the season on Friday.
East Forsyth opened its season with a win over Seckinger; Habersham Central held off White County in their annual battle; Jefferson rebounded with a win over Wren (SC); Towns County shocked off its heartbreaking loss last week with a win over Lake Oconee Academy at home, and West Hall won its third straight Battle of Oakwood pulling away in the second half to beat Johnson.
